Our Story
Uva Province of Sri Lanka had been a very prosperous state throughout its history. This area was called Uva Wellassa in ancient times. There are very strong evidences on the powerful history of the same. Uva Wellassa rebellion in 1818 against the British governance of Sri Lanka at that stage is one of the strongest among them. Uva Province is a landlocked area by the geography. It is situated hundreds of kilometers away from the capital of Sri Lanka where the main ports and airports are based in. With this geographical location, Uva Province is having major challenges on economic development.
All kind of industries are having challenges at Uva Province with the logistics. As only a handful of industries are based in Uva Province, an intellectual migration is happening from Uva Province every year. Information Technology / online entrepreneurship is one of the industries, which can be managed remotely with the online connectivity of the world. So, this industry was identified as the best industry to develop in Uva Province. Having this focus on mind the “Uva Startup Hub (USH)” was established in 2016 by a team of entrepreneurs, professionals, online freelancers and investors. It is a non-profit, non-government, non-political community. It is backed by the few IT firms based in Uva. The main focus of this community is to bring foreign currency to Uva Province by introducing a startup culture.
Through the Uva Startup Hub, mainly the knowledge and support is given to its members on below topics to either set up their startup business or start their online freelancing career.
